15 Matinee Concert
25. September 2016 - 11:00
In 1627 Moritz the Savant abdicated, ending one of the most glamorous periods in the history of Kassel. This matinee closing concert of La Principessa 2016 offers an interesting glimpse of the following period. During the turmoil of the Thirty Years’ War and the years thereafter two women, Amalie Elisabeth of Hanau-Münzenberg and Hedwig Sophie of Brandenburg, acted as regents for their underage sons, administering the Landgraviate of Hesse-Cassel for many years. In their honor works by two of the great woman composers of their era, Francesca Caccini and Barbara Strozzi, will be performed. One of the works by Barbara Strozzi, a cantata, is contained in a rare manuscript kept in the Manuscript Department of the Kassel University Library. This concert, performed by the camerata cavata, will be augmented by a cantata by Giovanni Legrenzi – also transcribed from a manuscript belonging to the Kassel University Library – and instrumental music by Biagio Marini, Dario Castello and Giovanni Picchi.
